Waking up to flip your pillow over for the cool side for the third time in one night? 🥵

We get it, and so does Simba. The brand that made its name with mattress-in-a-box technology has launched a pillow built specifically for hot sleepers: The Simba HeatRelease Pillow.

It combines graphite cooling strips, adaptive memory foam, and a down-like microfibre core, all wrapped in a cool-touch cover.

But does a pillow really have the power to keep your head cooler through the night?

Find out in our Simba HeatRelease Pillow review.

Who is the Simba HeatRelease Pillow suitable for?

The HeatRelease Pillow is Simba's most advanced cooling pillow, and it's well suited if:

  • You sleep hot: The graphite strips and cool-touch cover are aimed squarely at people who overheat or keep flipping the pillow to find a cooler spot.
  • You like a medium-firm feel: The memory foam gives contoured support, softened by the down-like microfibre layer.
  • You want plush comfort with support: It aims to blend the cushiness of a feather pillow with the shape-hugging feel of memory foam.
  • You want easy upkeep: The zip-off cover is washable, which helps if you sweat at night or have allergies.
  • You'd rather not fiddle with settings: There's no adjusting the fill, so it suits people who want a ready-to-go pillow.

But it's not the best choice for all sleepers. If you're looking for a height-adjustable pillow or something of a lower or higher loft, something feather-soft or much firmer, or are simply on an tigher budget, this is not the right choice for you - but we'll give you some alternatives further down!

What is the Simba HeatRelease Pillow?

The HeatRelease Pillow is Simba's ultimate cooling pillow, and it sits at the high-tech end of the Simba pillow range.

Rather than relying on a single cooling trick, it layers several features:

  • HeatRelease graphite strips to draw heat away from your head and neck
  • Adaptive memory foam for contouring support
  • Airy, down-like microfibre core for a softer, plusher feel
  • Cool-touch jacquard cover that feels cool as soon as you lie down
  • Washable, zip-off cover for easy care

Simba describes the feel as medium-firm, so it should suit people who want some support without a rock-hard feel.

How do the HeatRelease graphite strips work?

This is the headline feature, and the reason the pillow carries the HeatRelease name, like Simba's HeatRelease mattresses.

According to Simba, the pillow contains strips of graphite, a natural heat dissipator.

The idea is that they absorb excess body heat and move it away from you, so your head stays closer to an ideal sleeping temperature.

Simba claims this can help you sleep up to 1.7°C cooler over 8 hours.

A few things worth knowing about that claim:

  • It's a manufacturer figure, not an independent one.
  • "Up to" means results will vary depending on your room temperature, bedding, and body heat.
  • A pillow can only do so much. If you sleep hot, your mattress, duvet, and bedroom temperature matter just as much.

Still, graphite is a clever material choice, and it's less common in pillows than gel or ventilated foam.

To get the most out of it, we'd pair it with breathable bedding.

A light cotton or linen pillowcase will let the cool-touch cover and graphite strips do their job, while a heavy or synthetic case could work against them.

Simba has a range of excellent bedding options:

Comfort and support of the Simba HeatRelease pillow

Cooling is great, but a pillow still has to be comfortable.

Here, Simba pairs the contoured support of memory foam pillows with the plush, airy feel of down, so you get support without sacrificing softness.

Adaptive memory foam

Memory foam is designed to feel supportive without being too hard - moulds to your head and neck, adapts as you change position, and helps promote proper alignment.

It's a popular pillow material since it responds to pressure and warmth, gradually softening around the curve of your head and neck instead of pushing back. That can mean fewer pressure points and less tossing and turning.

The usual downside is that dense foam can trap heat, which is why the graphite strips and airy top layer matter so much here.

Down-like microfibre core

On top of the foam sits a soft, airy microfibre fill that aims to mimic the feel of down.

The idea is to get the best of both worlds: The plush, sink-in feeling of a feather pillow with the contoured support of memory foam.

It also helps with airflow, which is important if memory foam normally leaves you feeling hot.

How the layers work together

Simba designed the pillow so that each part has a job.

  • The cool-touch cover gives you that instant fresh feeling when you lie down.
  • The microfibre layer adds softness and airflow.
  • The memory foam provides the support underneath.
  • The graphite strips work in the background to draw heat away.

The idea is to avoid the usual trade-off with memory foam pillows, where you get great support but a hot, dense feel.

Because the foam is balanced by a lighter fill, the pillow feels more cushioned than a traditional solid foam block, though it won't be as squishy as a pure feather pillow.

Firmness of the Simba HeatRelease pillow

Simba lists the HeatRelease Pillow as medium-firm.

Unlike the Simba Hybrid Pillow, which has adjustable height and firmness, this one does not. That's worth bearing in mind if you're particular about loft.

All in all, the HeatRelease Pillow is aimed at people who want the shape-hugging support of memory foam with a softer, more breathable feel on top.

If you like a medium-firm pillow that cradles your head and neck, this is the kind of comfort it's designed to deliver.

How does the HeatRelease pillow compare to other Simba pillows?

Simba has several pillows, so which one is right for you?

  • HeatRelease Pillow: Simba's most advanced cooling pillow, with graphite strips, memory foam and a washable cover.
  • Simba Hybrid Pillow: Adjustable height and firmness, cool-touch Stratos tech and a machine washable cover. A better pick if you want to customise the feel.
  • Simba AeroDown Pillow: The budget option, with a lighter, down-like feel and cool-touch Stratos tech.
  • Simba Body Pillow: Built for side sleepers and pregnancy, with extra full-body support.

In short: Choose the HeatRelease if keeping cool is your top priority and you like a medium-firm feel.

Should you buy the Simba HeatRelease Pillow?

On paper, the Simba HeatRelease Pillow has a lot going for it. ⭐

Graphite strips, a cool-touch cover, memory foam support, and a washable zip-off cover make it one of the most thoughtfully designed cooling pillows we've come across.

The price might be a bit high, but you're paying for a genuinely different approach to temperature control.

It's best suited to hot sleepers who like a medium-firm pillow with a plush top layer.

If you want to adjust the height, Simba's Hybrid Pillow may be the better choice, and if you're on a tighter budget, we suggest the AeroDown.
